Named in honor of Valerii Viktorovich Averiev (Валерий Викторович Аверьев) (1929-1968), Russian volcanologist with the Institute of Volcanology, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii. He was a specialist in geothermal energy from volcanic regions.
