A view of the wall of the central area between the Middle Pit and the South Pit, as it appeared on August 30, 1998. Earlier in the day, two van loads of German geo-tourists pulled up to collect for a while at Gold Hill. Most puttered around, but this fellow was the exception. He tore into the Japan-Law twin zone, with the evident aim of moving as much rock as possible. His hammer was a blur, rocks were flying, and most of the other tourists gave him wide berth.
