Fluorite (Var: Chlorophane), Biotite, Microcline

Locality: Petrick pegmatite, Kingsland Granite Company quarry (Petrick quarry), Llano Co., Texas, USA

Note: The mineral species Chlorophane is not listed in our database for this locality. This specimen may be misidentified or the mindat list of minerals at this locality may be incomplete.

This 6cm x 2.5cm specimen of "vug hash" is composed of phosphorescent fluorite in a boxwork of biotite plates. Not visible in this photo is a 0.5 cm crystal of radioactive Fergusonite-Y embedded in the fluorite and protruding from the left-rear of the specimen. This is the "puce" fluorite referred to by William Hidden in his 1905 paper "Some Results of late Mineral Research in Llano County, Texas".(American Journal of Science, 4th series, volume 19, Number 114, pp. 425-433)

This fluorite exhibits a brilliant blue-green fluorescence under SW UV and will phosphoresce brightly for hours. It is also strongly thermoluminescent, even at room temperature. Click the thumbnails below to view the specimen under SW UV and in total darkness.
