This 10-micrometer wide star-shaped dendrite of graphite sits among a fine-grained crystalline overgrowth of graphite atop an earlier generation, 1-mm graphite crystal. The sample is from a pocket discovered in December 2007 associated with gem diopside, minor zeolite minerals, and micron-sized pyrite crystals. The micrograph was taken with a Hitachi S-4700 Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope at Michigan Technological University. Lower magnification view
