Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz)

Locality: Goat Fell, Isle of Arran, Strathclyde (Bute), Scotland, UK

Large Smoky Quartz crystal from Goatfell, Isle of Arran.

Dimensions: 7.5 x 4 x 3cm. Collected 10th June 1997, Mike Wood.

The largest I've found, but not the finest. The termination is a little chewed up, probably due to ice/frost heave in a confined space. Found loose below a weathered-out vug SW of summit of Goatfell. One side of the crystal has been bleached of it's otherwise deep smoky colour, by exposure to solar radiation.
The crystal is not very gemmy: full of inclusions (bubbles?).
