Almandine, Oligoclase (Var: Oligoclase-Albite)

Almandine, Oligoclase (Var: Oligoclase-Albite)

Almandine crystals with plagioclase feldspar. Almandine garnets are abundant at the location, both as bands in feldspar, and with muscovite mica. The specimen is 12 x 13 cm, and the largest crystal is just over 2 cm in diameter.

The garnets from the primary pegmatites in the general Evje/Iveland area are all of intermediate composition between almandine and spessartine, often with some Y2O3.Most of then have Mn>Fe and can be called spessartine. At the Steli quarry the almandine component has been dominant in the analysed samples.
