Bitumen, Calcite

Locality: Hastie's Quarry, Spar Mountain, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

Note: The mineral species Bitumen is not listed in our database for this locality. This specimen may be misidentified or the mindat list of minerals at this locality may be incomplete.

This is a close-up showing droplets of bitumen formed as calcite was growing over fluorite. The specimen broke along the contact between the two, and the spherical oil droplets either remained in the fluorite leaving dimples in the calcite or broke in half. Field of view is about 7 mm. Specimen is in the collection of the photographer Alan Goldstein.
