The weathered remains of John Peter Labat's cabin. Labat built this structure around 1909, at a site near the base of the pack trail which traversed southward and switchbacked along the steep ridge to the gem mine. The cabin is nestled away on a small hillock of slightly decomposed granite bedrock, and shaded by several large oak trees. The pine wood board and batton structure featured corrugated steel roofing, a pot-belly stove, and an indoor/outdoor fireplace constructed using the traditional Basque method of dry-stacking rock without mortar. Conveniently situated along the headwaters of the San Luis Rey river, this ideal living location featured year round water, and an adjacent grassy meadow for grazing livestock.
