Almandine

Locality: Steli Feldspar Quarry, Tveit, Iveland, Aust-Agder, Norway

Flattened garnet in mica. Note the complex crystal growth, which is common for amny of the flattened, but not completely flat crystals found trapped between mica sheets at this location.

The garnets from the primary pegmatites in the general Evje/Iveland area are all of intermediate composition between almandine and spessartine, often with some Y2O3. Most of then have Mn>Fe and can be called spessartine. At the Steli quarry the almandine component has been dominant in the analysed samples.
