Almandine

Locality: Steli Feldspar Quarry, Tveit, Iveland, Aust-Agder, Norway

Typical garnet coin. Note the complexity of the crystal. It is just over 3cm in diameter, but only 3mm thick. It is still only transluscent on the edges.

The garnets from the primary pegmatites in the general Evje/Iveland area are all of intermediate composition between almandine and spessartine, often with some Y2O3. Most of then have Mn>Fe and can be called spessartine. At the Steli quarry the almandine component has been dominant in the analysed samples.
