Cordierite

Locality: Richmond Soapstone Quarry (Harris Quarry), Richmond, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, USA

22 x 18 x 9 cm. Cordierite from this locality sets the standard for the species. Unlike the ugly material from most places, it is actually pretty here - sometimes. It has a waxy brown shoe-polish look to the surface on the best specimens, such as this one. This was collected by Bob Whitmore in the 1970s and is a very aesthetic cluster with a bit of attached matrix. Pen shown for scale. Ex. Robert Whitmore Collection.
