Locality: Empire Mine, Palmer, Marquette iron range, Marquette Co., Michigan, USA

This is a view of part of the Empire Mine open pit. At the time this photo was taken, the pit was 1.6 miles by 0.8 miles and 910 feet deep. They are mining the Palaeoproterozoic Negaunee Iron Formation. Special thanks to Cleveland Cliffs for allowing me and my students onsite.
