During the 1970's a few specimens were encountered at the Sunnyside Mine with neat clear crystals of gypsum associated with rhodochrosite. This is one of those examples, and is quite large for the find. The specimen consists of a flattish matrix which was scattered richly with pink rhodochrosite crystals. Growing over these is a large colorless transparent gypsum crystal. The underlying rhodochrosite crystals can be seen through the gypsum. Very light chipping is present, typical of this soft species. Not complete on the back; the crystal is cleaved there as seen in the last photograph. Unusual and quite neat for the locality. Measures 12.7 x 10.0 x 6.0 cm. A small example of one of these gypsum/rhodochrosite combination pieces is shown in The Mineralogical Record: 7: 286; figure 14. Ex Lawrence and Virginia Heiner collection; they acquired the piece from Richard Kosnar in the early 1980's.
