Sedimentary fill of the Midcontinent Rift zone near Montreal River, Ontario

Locality: Algoma District, Ontario, Canada

Conglomerate that contributed to filling of the 1.1-1.2 Ga (billion years old) Midcontinent Rift, exposed along Canada Hwy 17 near Montreal River. Clasts include intrusive igneous, metavolcanic, and metasedimentary rocks. The reddish stain is from the fine-grained, hematite-rich matrix. Photo 2005.
