Gold was first noted from Gundagai in 1842 but the gold rush didn't reach here until 1858, with a second rush in the 1890s. The gold generally occured in quartz veins in serpentine. This specimen shows the gold in the serpentine itself. Photo width 4mm.

Herbert Hoover, before he was President of the the United States, was a mining engineer at one of the local mines around 1900.
