Beryl (Var: Heliodor)

Beryl (Var: Heliodor)

Gem heliodor crystal, 4 x 3 x 3.5 cm, viewed down the c axis. Former Lawrence Conklin specimen. Anthony J. Albini collection, (# 2027). Harold Moritz photo. Very few crystals survive today as most were cut for gem rough. According to Sterrett (1923, pages 63-65) and Kunz (in U.S. Geological Survey volumes on minerals for 1885, 1892, 1898 and 1899) the mine was operated for mica, feldspar, and gem beryl between 1880 and 1900. Sterrett adds on page 65 that "in 4 years $17,000 of gem beryl is reported to have been sold." Information from Pegmatite Investigations 1942-1945 New England Geological Survey Professional Paper 255 by Eugene N. Cameron and Others.
