Regional Report: Dannemora mine, Dannemora, Östhammar, Uppland, Sweden

Iron mine with minor copper and silver. Earliest mentioned as silver mine 1481. The iron ore low in phosphorus and rich in lime and manganese was the base for the high quality steel from the famous Walloon works. Comprises around 50 open-cast mines of which the largest, Storrymningen, is 200 m long and 100 m deep. Closed 1992. Reopening in 2009 by Dannemora Mineral AB. Test mining has started, production planned for fall.
