Regional Report: Horoman peridotite body, Samani-cho, Samani-gun, Hidaka Province, Hokkaido Island, Japan

Ref.: E. Takazawa et al., Journal of Petrology, V 40, N 12, December 1999, pp. 1827-1851; Morishita and S. Arai, Journal of Petrology, 2001, V 42, N 7, pp. 1279-1299. Complex peridotite body, with three peridotite suites : 1) Harzburgite / lherzolite suite 2) Banded dunite / harzburgite suite (cumulate) 3) Spinel-rich dunite / wehrlite suite (cumulate) The structure of the peridotite body is layered, two main zones have been distinguished : - Upper zone (600 meter thick) : Core of an ascending mantle diapir (with thermal gradient), with plagioclase lherzolites and harzburgites, and mafic layers. - Lower zone (2200 meter thick) : Margin of an ascending mantle diapir, with cyclic layers plagioclase lherzolite/lherzolite/harzburgite/dunite/harzburgite/lherzolite/plagioclase lherzolite (with mafic layers). The garnet peridotite (830 Ma) grades into a plagioclase peridotite during ascension. The Horoman peridotite is a MORB-related oceanic mantle subsided to deeper mantle depth, before crustal ascension and emplacement (23 Ma).
