Regional Report: Kraubath, Leoben, Styria, Austria

Ultramafic body of the middle austro-alpine unit, mainly consisting of dunite and serpentinite. Since the early 19th century, this complex was worked for chromite (1855-1881, for the production of pigments) and for magnesite (since about 1850). Ancient galleries, adits and dumps of the mines are still present south of Kraubath (Mitterberg and Fledelberg mountains, Augraben) and southeast of Kraubath (Sommergraben). At Gulsen, Preg and in the Lobminggraben near St Stefan, the serpentinite is quarried to produce a gravel for road and railway construction.
