Named in 1839 by Ernst Friedrich Glocker from the Greek αλ΢ meaning salt and ΟΟΞΉΞΊΞΏΞΆ meaning hair. Latin form is "halotrichum," which in turn is from the older German name "Haarsalz" (hair salt).
