Bisbeeite

Formula:
(Cu,Mg)SiO

·nH

2
O
Colour:Blue
Name:Named after Bisbee, Cochise County, Arizona, from where it was first described.

Originally described from Shattuck Mine, Bisbee, Warren District, Mule Mts, Cochise Co., Arizona, USA.

Classification of Bisbeeite

IMA status:Discredited
Explanation of status:A rare, poorly defined, secondary copper mineral. Defined by Schaller (1915), reviewed by Laurent & Pierrot (1962), who studied type material and compared it with African occurrences. Their studies confirmed it as a distinct species. Bisbeeite from the Grandview Mine (reported by Rogers, 1922) was later found to be cyanotrichite (Gordon, 1923). Oosterwyck-Gastuche (1967) concluded that the validity of bisbeeite was doubtful after examining material from another locality.
Discredited by CNMMN (1977) = chrysocolla.
