Colour:
Purplish pink with a slight brown tint
Lustre:
Vitreous, Sub-Vitreous
Hardness:
Specific Gravity:

Crystal System:
Monoclinic
Name:
Named in 2009 by Jiří Sejkora, Frank C. Hawthorne, Mark A. Cooper, Joel D. Grice, Josef Vajdak, and John L. Jambor in honor of the discoverer, David Burgess [April 18, 1951 USA - August 28, 2016 Newington, Connecticut, USA], a prolific mineral species collector and aspiring museum owner/curator.
Isostructural with:
This is an extremely rare cobalt hydrogen arsenate mineral that strongly resembles erythrite. Erythrite has a steep termination characteristic of the vivianite group. Initial observations of burgessite suggest that it has a termination with a noticeably less acute slope and the crystal cross-sections look more like rods than blades. Originally, only a single 4 x 5 cm matrix specimen with a coating of what proved to be the new species, burgessite, was found in the Joseph Cilen collection (Hawthorne, New Jersey, USA), but subsequently 5 pieces were discovered during the investigation to name the species.
