Named in honor of Mitrofan Stepanovich Tochilin (Митрофан Степанович Точилин) (15 December 1910, Bolshaya Podosinki, now Bryansk region, Russian Empire - 11 January 1968, Voronezh, USSR), Professor of Mineralogy, Voronezh University, Russia. He was a specialist on the Kola Penninsula.

General Appearance of Type Material:
As radiating aggregates of cylindrical acicular crystals, which may be hollow, to 1 cm; as paper-thin coatings, felted masses, and as clots.
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
A.E. Fersman Mineralogical Museum, Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia.
Geological Setting of Type Material:
In serpentinite (lizardite), in a Cu-Ni bearing intrusive complex and in basic intrusive rocks.
