Formula:
Nd(PO4) · 2H2O
Colour:
Yellowish white
Lustre:
Vitreous
Hardness:
3 - 3½
Crystal System:
Monoclinic
Name:
Named for Arthur Hubert Church (1834-1915), English chemist who described and analyzed the mineral.
A neodymium-rich churchite-(Y).
According to the paper by Podporina et al. (1983), the mineral named as churchite-(Nd) is only a Nd-rich variety of churchite-(Y). The Y content was not determined directly.
Walenta (1995) states in his description of churchite minerals from the Black Forest, Germany: "… Hier dürfte unter den Seltenen Erden Nd dominieren, was zur Bezeichnung Churchit-(Nd) führen würde."
The occurrence of Nd-dominant churchite reported from Italy (Bersani et al., 2011) is not confirmed. The specimen was subsequently characterized as rhabdophane-(Nd) (M.E. Ciriotti, pers.com., 2014).
No reliable quantitative chemical analyses of the above material is available.
Discredited by IMA nomenclature proposal 15-C, March 2015.
