About PyropeHide

Formula:
Mg3Al2(SiO4)3
Colour:
Blood red, orange red, purple red, pink, black red, colorless.
Lustre:
Vitreous
Hardness:
7 - 7½
Specific Gravity:
3.582
Crystal System:
Isometric
Name:
From the Greek "pyropos", "fiery-eyed", in allusion to the red hue.
Type Locality:
Dimorph of:
Garnet Group.
Almandine-Pyrope Series, Knorringite-Pyrope Series, Pyrope-Grossular Series.

Occurs predominantly in ultrabasic igneous rocks.

Pure end-member pyrope is colorless! (but rare).

Optical anisotropy may be present, caused by strain-induced birefringence, in relation to occurrence of more than a single (cubic) phase (Antao, 2021).

Physical Properties of PyropeHide

Vitreous
Transparency:
Transparent, Translucent
Colour:
Blood red, orange red, purple red, pink, black red, colorless.
Comment:
The “alexandrite effect” is when its colour changes from green in the presence of daylight to purplish red under incandescent light. The UV-Vis spectra show two zones of transmittance, in the red region at 650–700 nm and the blue-green region at 460–510 nm. The absorption bands of Cr3+ and V3+ at 574 nm in the UV-Vis spectra are the main cause of the change in colour. see: Qiu, Yan, and Ying Guo
Streak:
White
Hardness:
7 - 7½ on Mohs scale
Tenacity:
Brittle
Cleavage:
None Observed
None
Fracture:

Density:
