Detail of the meta-pegmatitic outcrops (Spring 2009)

I Mondei (Ca' Mondei), Montescheno, Antrona Valley, Ossola Valley, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province, Piedmont, Italy

Aside the main excavation adit, the meta-pegmatite is still well visible. A marked scistosity outlined by biotite layers is the most remarkable and immediate feature, and contrasting with "common sense" feeling for pegmatites. Feldspars are microcristalline and quartz is arranged in lenticular bodies as result of an intensive recristallization ...

Digging for minerals (spring 2009)

I Mondei (Ca' Mondei), Montescheno, Antrona Valley, Ossola Valley, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province, Piedmont, Italy

Finally digging for some small pod of the U-Zr-REE mineralization (30\05\09). We found a few mm-sized octaedric xls of Uraninite, sometimes partly pseudo-morphosed by currently unknown green-to-yellow-to-orange secondary U minerals and associated with rare sub-mm Zircon, cm sized but fractured green "Apatite" and a citrine yellow seconday U ...

On arrival at the old mining site (Spring 2009)

I Mondei (Ca' Mondei), Montescheno, Antrona Valley, Ossola Valley, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province, Piedmont, Italy

On arrival at the old minig site, the ancient building for administration is still waiting for you, after an hour and half of steep path. The pathway was severly damaged in the last part and, especially from Alpe Aulamia, largely obscured by vegetation (with some red signs still visible, luckly). Please take care!

View of the main excavation adit (spring 2009)

I Mondei (Ca' Mondei), Montescheno, Antrona Valley, Ossola Valley, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province, Piedmont, Italy

View of the main excavation adit (30 may 2009), now partly collapsed and covered by vegetation. Rocks on the floor are slippery and loose. Please take care!

View of the old dumps (Spring 2009)

I Mondei (Ca' Mondei), Montescheno, Antrona Valley, Ossola Valley, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province, Piedmont, Italy

Partial View of the old dumps, just below the main excavation site. We dedicated no more than half an hour to visit it without any significant findings (just some poor quality garnets). Garnet and Beryl were here uncommon in the past (even a few years ago,) including the interesting recristallised Beryl with 2nd generation crystals free standing ...
