“Tank Pile,” Black Pine Mine

Black Pine Mine (Combination Mine; Black Pine Tailings; Black Pine Dump), Flint Creek Valley, John Long Mts, Philipsburg District (Flint Creek District), Granite Co., Montana, USA

This pile of rock sits on a hill directly above the main tunnel of the Black Pine Mine. There is a tank, ostensibly for diesel fuel, located under the pile of rock. The tank was definitely filled at this point, but the mine vehicles might have been fueled directly below, in the mine proper. Some of the rock covering this pile is vuggy, typical of ...

500 Feet below the surface.

Summit Mine (Old Summit; Montana Silver Star), Radersburg District (Cedar Plains District; Lone Mountain District), Broadwater Co., Montana, USA

Looking down the shaft at about 500 feet below the surface. Consider that all the hemimorphite specimens came from below this area and were packed up 500+ feet of ropes and ladders.

Ad Hoc Campground, Black Pine, Montana

Black Pine Mine (Combination Mine; Black Pine Tailings; Black Pine Dump), Flint Creek Valley, John Long Mts, Philipsburg District (Flint Creek District), Granite Co., Montana, USA

There are no services near the Black Pine Mine that are closer than Philipsburg, but there are plenty of spots similar to this one that can afford very pleasant camping. There is a nice grassy spot off the road in the distance that can accommodate several campers. I discovered this campsite on my first trip to the Black Pine, and it continued to ...

Amethyst pocket in situ

Little Gem mine, Boulder Batholith, Jefferson Co., Montana, USA

Several excavated amethyst pockets, found where three or more large Baveno twins of microcline intersect, trapping volatiles. The Baveno twins grow roughly perpendicular to the wallrock contacts and grow euhedrally into the massive smoky quartz core of the pegmatite. Note Estwing hoe pick at left for size comparison.

Black Pine Mine Buildings

Black Pine Mine (Combination Mine; Black Pine Tailings; Black Pine Dump), Flint Creek Valley, John Long Mts, Philipsburg District (Flint Creek District), Granite Co., Montana, USA

A view of the mine buildings of the Black Pine Mine. The buildings included an office, assay lab, maintenance, and storage. The adit enters the hill behind the buildings just down from where the electrical lines are visible in the background. Barely visible below the sign in front of the main entrance is a large chunk of choice, colorful, vuggy, ...
