Air Shaft - Emergency Exit

Robinson-Lasher mine, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Livingston Co., Kentucky, USA

The air shaft entrance (and emergency exit) for the Robinson - Lasher mine. This is not an open shaft -- it is covered by a heavy welded steel mesh. There is a small gap to fit a camera lens! The water is about 100-feet down the shaft and is about 200 feet deep. Photo by Alan Goldstein, October 29, 2005.

Babb - Barnes mill area

Eagle-Babb Mine, Salem, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Crittenden Co., Kentucky, USA

The largest dumps at the mill site are on the right side of this image. The Eagle-Babb mine did not produce a lot of well-crystallized minerals and the dump reflects that. (It did produce the finest Kentucky fluorite specimen - blue over yellow - in 1954. The specimen is at the Clement Mineral Museum.) Photo by Alan Goldstein, August 17, 2005. ...

Collapsing ore bin?

Mary Belle Mine, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Crittenden Co., Kentucky, USA

A concrete slab slowly topples by the weight of rocks and tree roots at the Mary Belle mine. This might be an old ore bin. Rock is dominated by calcite in limestone. Small amounts of fluorite and other minerals were noted, although no collecting was done from this pile. Photographed by Alan Goldstein, August 17, 2005.
