Abandoned Quarry

Lockwood, Byram Township, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA

This site lies off the mule road which was the predecessor road to the Sussex Branch RR. Near the South shore of Cranberry Lake. Minerals found during an extensive search/dig correspond to those listed on the locality page.

9/22/09-I have just reviewed a map from 1944 which indicates that at one time, this area was mined for Mica.

Sulphur Hill Mine (Sulfur Hill Mine), Andover Township, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA

To transport ore out of this immense pit, a haulage tunnel was drilled to the South. At some point there was a collapse and the southern entrance was blocked causing the tunnel to flood.
