Adolf Fredrik shaft

The cover and the five pages in this booklet are reproductions of Hans Raine´s well-known mine map over the Falun Mine. Completed in 1683, it was the last map to be drawn before the great cave-in in 1687 when the mine received its present-day feature with the huge open pit. Falu mine open pit

Falun mine, Falun, Dalarna, Sweden

Studies have been made in the former peat bog at the Falu mine (the dark band just below the surface on the picture above). Different analysis from material show that mining might have begun as early as 400-600 AD. Other dating methods has indicated that operations started 700-1000 AD. (Ref L. Lindeström).
