East Transition Zone | |
Walker Valley, Mount Vernon, Skagit Co., Washington, USA A good example of the black to grey/green transition zone on the E side of the black rock. Many rounds apparent, the large one we took home whole and cut and it turns out to be a purple beauty! We worked this area down as far as we could then buried it in glacial overburden so it wouldn't be good for rip rap. |

Walker Valley, Mount Vernon, Skagit Co., Washington, USA And for his hard word was rewarded. That's an eight pound sledge, and that's not the only hollow around. |

Stilpnomelane Outcrop at Blanchard Hill
Blanchard Hill (Blanchard Mountain), Bellingham, Skagit Co., Washington, USA The authors of “Mineralogy of Maine, Volume 1: Descriptive Mineralogy,” Vandall King (on the left) and the late Eugene Foord, inspect an outcrop of Stilpnomelane in the other upper corner of the contiguous United States, in Washington State. I was my distinct pleasure to lead the field trip that day, accompanied by two mineralogists possessing ... |

Stilpnomelane Outcrop at Blanchard Hill
Blanchard Hill (Blanchard Mountain), Bellingham, Skagit Co., Washington, USA Stilpnomelane is not really a common mineral species, but, in an outcrop at Blanchard Hill, it constitutes the majority of the rock that is present. In this photograph, the late mineralogist-geologist, Eugene E. Foord, poses in front of the outcrop. Most of the black is Stilpnomelane. Robert Meyer photograph, taken on 7-24-1996. |

The Perfect rock | |
Walker Valley, Mount Vernon, Skagit Co., Washington, USA If it weren't now covered by 4-8 ft. of rubble, this area would produce 13 million yr. old water filled vugs with the most beautiful calcite formations on clear or amethyst points. These two troopers love to pound on rock, covered in safety gear. New Year's Eve 2004 |

Two days later | |

Walker Valley, Mount Vernon, Skagit Co., Washington, USA In 2003 & 2004 the most active areas of Walker Valley's black andesite were drilled and blasted by the local companies to mix in the the more altered orange/grey andesite in abundance for road fill. Supposedly the WSMC had a marked lease on the (museum quality) crystal zone but try to find out what's going on from anyone and it's anyone's best ... |
