Manganese Fever!

Torr Works Quarry (Merehead Quarry), Cranmore, Somerset, England, UK

The Russell Society digging out manganese pods from the quarry floor during a field trip in June 2005. These pods yielded some mereheadite and mimetite, plus carbonates. Notice that collecting here is kinda dirty work - manganese oxide dust is both staining and pervasive.

Manganese pods in situ, July 2005

Torr Works Quarry (Merehead Quarry), Cranmore, Somerset, England, UK

The three holes in the foreground contained manganese pods which were excavated in July 2005. My truck in the background gives some idea of scale. These pods contained the oxychloride minerals mereheadite and symesite, along with fornacite, mimetite, and a range of carbonate minerals.
