Collecting at the Centennial Eureka Mine

Centennial Eureka Mine (Blue Rock), Tintic District, East Tintic Mts, Juab Co., Utah, USA

When good specimens are plentiful, a collector just wants to stake out a piece of ground and get down close to the rock with loupe and hammer. In this photograph, Wes Gannaway can be seen adopting this collecting technique. Robert Meyer photograph, taken on August 27, 1998.

Larry Collecting Chalcedony

Drum Mountains-Detroit Occurrence, Detroit District (Drum District; Joy District), Drum Mts, Juab Co., Utah, USA

This ridge is famous with the locals for its agate. The agate is named for an old ghost town (Joy Agate) nearby where they mined a small gold deposit.

The agate litters the ground and large boulders are common. We found some that were at least 10 feet by 7 feet and went several feet into the ground.
