The 1944 lava flow of Vesuvius | |

Monte Somma, Somma-Vesuvius Complex, Naples Province, Campania, Italy The last time Vesuvius had an eruption was in March 1944. Grey lava flow from this eruption is seen here in the Valle del Gigante against the steep caldera wall of Mt. Somma. The first eruption of Vesuvius took place about 17.000 years ago and its oldest lava flows rest on 36.000 years old flows from the Phlegrean Fields. Lava flows found ... |
