Columnar Jointing at Kilbourne Hole

Besides peridot bombs, Kilbourne Hole also sports the features of classic basaltic volcanism. Here you can clearly see columnar jointing in the basalt wall as well as the welded ash above. I'm fascinated by how much the 4X4s parked topside look like Hot Wheels--apparently that's an effect of digital photography.

From left to right, my daughter Emily, myself, sister Tina and brother in law Rob at the rim of Kilbourne Hole NM. Kilbourne Hole is a maar, and if you didn't know it was there you could drive right by it. The area where the peridot bombs can be found is roughly to the left of Emily's hat.

You will note that I am no longer the dumpy overdressed figure featured in the first photograph. For one thing, the wind was WILD, so the hat ended up in the car. When the wind wasn't blowing, it was HOT, hence the lack of chamois shirt.
