A massive vein of so-called "fasibitikite" of Tertiary age in Jurassic Isalo limestones. Subvertical plagioclasite veins in "cipolin", a mica-rich marble. These plagioclasite veins are the carrier of the primary sapphire mineralization at Andranondambo. Width of view approximately 1.50 m. Taken in 2005.

Andranondambo sapphire deposits, Maromby Commune, Amboasary District, Anosy (Fort Dauphin) Region, Tuléar (Toliara) Province, Madagascar

General view of the artisanal sapphire mining site near Andranondambo. The main sapphire deposit forms a slight ridge. The marbles, skarns, cipolins and sapphire-bearing plagioclasite veins are covered by a thick crust of calcrete. Alluvial and eluvial sapphire is found all around the ridge. Width of view approximately 250 m. Taken in August 2005.
