A portion of the oxidation dumps.

Foote Lithium Co. Mine (Foote Mine), Kings Mountain District, Cleveland Co., North Carolina, USA

One view of the very old dumps that are adjacent to interstate 85 about half a mile from the pit. Almost all the material here is from the oxidation zone and with a lot of work, many secondary phosphate species can be obtained as very small micro xls. There are no primary phosphate phases at Foote, just cavities left behind from etched away ...

Foote Mine as it appears today

Foote Lithium Co. Mine (Foote Mine), Kings Mountain District, Cleveland Co., North Carolina, USA

The old quarry as it appears today (spring 2004). Pegmatite exposures clearly visible. Quarry pond is very deep and full of catfish. The knob at the upper right-hand is the main dump ["parsettensite dump" is what the locals have called it for many years because that is mostly what you find (although I have found many species there)].

Fresh pegmatite exposure, 1968

Foote Lithium Co. Mine (Foote Mine), Kings Mountain District, Cleveland Co., North Carolina, USA

A saturday after a blast complete with collectors! Note pegmatite exposures in background in dark country rock (schists with abundant holmquistite and prehnite/calcite veins). Photo taken by the late Louis Shrum in May, 1968. My mother had yet to enter high school by this point!
