M68-J3RFluorite CaF2 , Goethite α-Fe3+O(OH)

06325710014947329362709.jpg
Burtree Slits, Cowshill, Stanhope, County Durham, England, UK

Dimensions: 52 mm x 40 mm x 24 mm
Largest Crystal Size: 5.0 mm

MORPHOLOGY: Twinned
COLOUR: Colourless (purple phantoms)

A cavity in the ironstone matrix is lined with decomposed Siderite crystals (Goethite). Settled on top is a group of transparent interpenetrating Fluorite crystals. The crystals appear colourless when viewed straight on but appear a slight purple colour when the crystal face is viewed from the underside, due to the presence of a purple 'phantom' layer.
