Insitu quartz (to about 7cm) and ankerite on sandstone. The sandstone bands, usually about a metre thick run broadly horizontally in the pit. The location is in the area behind the drill rig at centre LHS on the general site picture shown at http://www.mindat.org/photo-233091.html

Nant Helen opencast coal mine, Onllwyn, Neath-Port Talbot (West Glamorgan; Glamorgan), Wales, UK

quartz crystals

Nant Helen opencast coal mine, Onllwyn, Neath-Port Talbot (West Glamorgan; Glamorgan), Wales, UK

Part of a batch of just-collected muddy quartz crystals to 70mm. These were loosely lining a large cavity in a sandstone bed. The red blobs are blood, these were sharp rocks!

Sandstone band, about 1m deep. Joints and fractures in these bands, which run broadly horizontally across the pit, are where the minerals occur. This one was out of reach!
