Insitu quartz and ankerite

Opencast Coal Mine
	Nant Helen opencast coal mine, Onllwyn, Neath-Port Talbot (West Glamorgan; Glamorgan), Wales, UK Working a bed of sandstone between shale. The minerals were collected from rent fractures in the more brittle sndstone member. The creamy ankerite can be seen coating such a facture.

quartz crystals
	Nant Helen opencast coal mine, Onllwyn, Neath-Port Talbot (West Glamorgan; Glamorgan), Wales, UK Part of a batch of just-collected muddy quartz crystals to 70mm. These were loosely lining a large cavity in a sandstone bed. The red blobs are blood, these were sharp rocks! This is the second massive opencast at Nant Helen, the first having been backfilled in the early 2000s. Picture taken on 30th May 2009.

Sandstone band
	Nant Helen opencast coal mine, Onllwyn, Neath-Port Talbot (West Glamorgan; Glamorgan), Wales, UK Sandstone band, about 1m deep. Joints and fractures in these bands, which run broadly horizontally across the pit, are where the minerals occur. This one was out of reach!
