ASM sign at entrance of mine | |
Ytterby, Resarö, Vaxholm, Uppland, Sweden Sign set up by ASM in recognition of the historical role of the Ytterby mine in chemistry and mineralogy. Besides the four elements mentioned, Ytterby is also the birthplace of holmium, scandium and thulium. The mine was worked continuously from the 1750's to 1933 and reached a depth of about 170 meters. |

Ytterby, Resarö, Vaxholm, Uppland, Sweden This photo shows a richly mineralized section of the pegmatite wall. The feldspar is transsected by thin sheets of biotite, all covered with crystals of zircon and a number of different Y-Ta-Nb-REE oxides. The field of view is 0.6-0.7 meters. |

Ytterby, Resarö, Vaxholm, Uppland, Sweden This photo of a section of the eastern wall, opposite the other images shown, displays a "hotspot" of a mixture of allanite, euxenite, polycrase and formanite, the latter mineral forming tiny, thin, yellow plates intimately associated with the other minerals. The coin shown for scale is 25 mm. |

Ytterby, Resarö, Vaxholm, Uppland, Sweden Part of the pegmatite wall visible and accessible above ground level. From this level down to about 50 meters the pegmatite was extremely rich in REE minerals. The underground shaft has been used as an oil depot, and is not accessible. Today the mine and dumps constitute a protected natural monument, and all collecting is prohibited. |
