A Dangerous Job

Annabel Lee mine, Harris Creek Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A miner doing what is perhaps the most dangerous job underground -- removing loose slabs of rock from the ceiling after the face of the orebody has been blasted. Roof bolts will be installed once the ore has been hauled away. This is on the 900 foot level in the south orebody. Photograph by Chris Anderson, May 1987 (scanned slide).

Calcite in the Roof of the Mine

Annabel Lee mine, Harris Creek Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

Brecciated areas on the 900-foot level in the south orebody contained abundant doubly terminated calcite. Minor fluorite and bitumen are also present. Photograph by Chris Anderson, May 1987.

Dumping Fluorite into the Grizzly

Annabel Lee mine, Harris Creek Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A small dump truck dumps ore onto the grizzly - a metal grid. Larger rocks are broken up by the jack hammer. Smaller ore immediately goes through the chute to be hauled to the surface in a skip (ore bucket). Photograph by Chris Anderson, May 1987. (From a scanned slide)

Front-end Loader Moving In

Annabel Lee mine, Harris Creek Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

A diesel-powered front-end loader moves in to the mine face of the south orebody. This equipment is hauled down to the bottom of the shaft in pieces where it is assembled in the shop. Photograph by Chris Anderson, May 1987. (From a scanned slide)

Getting ready to remove ore

A diesel-powered front-end loader reaches the mine face of the south orebody at 900 feet below the surface. The diesel exhaust fogs the air. Photograph by Chris Anderson, May 1987. (From a scanned slide)

Jumbo at 1300 feet undergorund

Annabel Lee mine, Harris Creek Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

Perhaps the noisiest place on earth was where this picture was taken. Drilling 1,300 feet beneath the surface in the face of the north orebody in the Annabel Lee mine, this image shows the "jumbo" with 2 rotary drills. The noise level was probably about 150 decibels! We didn't stay very long! Photo by Chris Anderson, May 1987.
