Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA This is where the town of Cave in Rock got its name. This short, but impressive cave opens to the banks of the Ohio River. It is in Cave in Rock State Park. The sycamore tree at the entrance has since died and is gone. Many thousands of cores are visible, most from the Illinois - Kentucky fluorspar district, with some from fluorite areas in Colorado. Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA The Minerva No. 1 mine exploited the largest orebody in the Illinois - Kentucky fluorspar district. Victory Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA Alan Goldstein climbs the mountainous dump of the Victory mine looking for specimens. While yard rocks are numerous, mineral specimens larger than thumbnails are few and far between. This dump is over 100 feet in length and at least two to three stories high!
