Dunton Gem Quarry, Newry, Oxford Co., Maine, USA
Dunton pegmatite was discovered by Henry Hall (age 60) in 1898 while hunting for bear. The locality was soon explored by a distant neighbor, Edmund Bailey. Others followed. Two different partnerships involving Hollis Dunton and a group of investors searched for gem tourmaline in 1902-1905, but the locality was not productive enough. In 1926-1929, ... |
