A view of one of the fjords in the complex

Kangerdluarssuq (Kangerdluarssuk; Kangerdluarsuk) Firth, Ilimaussaq complex, Narsaq, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

The areas within the complex are huge - note the size of the boat in this photo, and the vegatation free areas marking the boundries of the complex. This area is near the type locality for eudialyte, and is famous for finds of tugtupite, sodalite, and many rare systematic minerals.

Breaking a boulder of sodalite

Tunugdliarfik Firth (Eriksfjord), Ilimaussaq complex, Narsaq, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

On the cliffs high above the Tunuliarfik Fjord we found a boulder of very gemmy emerald green sodalite. We carted drill, generator, and blasting tools to break it into collectable pieces. This image shows the terrain and the rocks found everywhere in the alkaline Ilimaussaq Complex.

July 4th fluorescent mineral collecting on Taseq

Tasseq Slopes (Taseq Slopes), Tasseq area, Ilimaussaq complex, Narsaq, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

A view from near the top of the Taseq Slope showing the alakaline "rockscape", and snow on July 4th. Frustratingly, this year (2006) the best veins of tugtupite were buried under the snow.

Kvanefjeld plateau, Geenland

Kuannersuit (Kvanefjeld) plateau, Ilimaussaq complex, Narsaq, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

The Greenlanders have been working some pegmatites on the Kvanefjeld plateau for pink tugtupite. The Kvanefjeld plateau consists of several localities. In the loose rock of the dump on this pegmatite several rare minerals have been found. Our group found nice specimens of nabesite. I took this photo in July 2001.

Mine Adit - Kvanefjeld

Kvanefjeld tunnel, Kvanefjeld Uranium deposit, Kuannersuit (Kvanefjeld) plateau, Ilimaussaq complex, Narsaq, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

There is an old uranium mine about halfway up Kvanefjeld mountain. The entrance is barred (locked) and it has been closed for many years. This is a great resting point on the hike up to the tugtupite mines.

Mining sodalite in Ilimaussaq

Ilimaussaq complex, Narsaq, Kitaa (West Greenland) Province, Greenland

A view of the very friable syenite rock from one of the many cliffs in the Ilimaussaq Complex, Greenland. The nature of the alkaline rocks prevents vegatation from taking hold, and provides easy access to 200+ types of minerals. Mining tools must be hand carried up the mountain, thus limiting the type of equipment used to mine.
