Cardiff Mine skip

03068330014961269649271.jpg
Cardiff Mine, Homer-Wauseca Group, Mineral Hills, Iron County, Michigan, USA

Nice picture of probably one of the last used skips to take miners below the surface, which leads me to believe that the mine was worked in it's later years by way of the Homer property which is about 1/4 mile away.In a 600 acre area of Mineral Hills there may have been 15 mines working simultaneously, a satellite photo will reveal the remnents of the mines by the ground that eventually caved once the pumps where shut down and the mines closed. Cardiff Mine Head Frame

Cardiff Mine, Homer-Wauseca Group, Mineral Hills, Iron County, Michigan, USA

The remains of the Cardiff Mine Headframe still standing tall after almost a century. Even though the mine was worked from the Homer Mine until 1969 it is unlikely that this headframe was used to access the mine depths after it originally closed in the early 1920's, The owner of the property bought the land so that the headframe could not be demolished:one of two still standing in Iron County. Iron ore left behind

Bates Mine, Mineral Hills, Iron County, Michigan, USA

The mine closed in the mid-1940's and the slag pile is still quite impressive. This is on private property, please get the owners permission before inspecting the site. Photo taken in August of 2012

Bates Mine, Mineral Hills, Iron County, Michigan, USA

Very nice view atop the iron ore pile left behind. The owner of the property told us that his sister visits periodically and when using a Geiger Counter ias able to pick up a radioactive reading so you may not want to spend too much time on top of the heap. Photo taken in August of 2012

Bates Mine Shaft and Vent

Bates Mine, Mineral Hills, Iron County, Michigan, USA

In the center of the photograph is the air shaft for the Bates Mine. My grandfather; Joseph Wodzinski spent his entire mining career at this location working in a five foot stope with 3 feet of water. The mine was quite wet and at one time there was a mud lake in the immediate area. This is private property and the land has been in the family for many generations, please take the oppoetunity to ask the owner before venturing to the site. Photos were taken in August of 2012, tour courtesy of Mr. J. Barry.

Delta mine brick work looking west

06582670014950881031774.jpg
Delta Mine, Iron River, Iron County, Michigan, USA

This is very close to where the mine shaft of the Delta Mine would have been located and the photograph was taken from part way up Stambaugh hill. The woods and under growth are quite thick in the area. The Delta Mine was originally opened in 1920 and close to 100,000 tons of iron ore was shipped, it is quite possible that caving grounds exist so exercise caution and good judgement when touring this mine site.Photo taken in August of 2012

brick work near mine site

This brick work would be just about the exact location of where the Delta Mine was located on the Stambaugh side of the Iron River.Photo taken in August of 2012
