Born in England, raised in Wales and now adopted by Ireland. I was interested in geology from an early age. When asked that question, ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ I used to reply ‘palaeontologist’, much to the askers surprise. I was fortunate enough to study geology from the age of 14 at school, progressing onto college and a PhD. I started my geological collection by picking things up wherever I went, although fossils formed the major part until I came to Ireland in 1990. My PhD took me to Donegal and Fermanagh where I collected both minerals and fossils although by this time I think the mineral bug had taken hold.
I now work as a geological consultant, which I balance between, looking after my son, gardening and collecting (whenever possible). I am trying to put together a topographic collection of Irish minerals which seems to be a lifetime commitment.
