I am a Production Manager within a Biopharmaceutical facility but minerals - particularly gem crystals are my passion.
I was brought up in South Africa and moved to the UK in around 1990. I have been collecting since I was 5 after finding a weird shaped piece of glass that proved to be a rock crystal. I lost interest in later years after moving to the UK but this was re-kindled when I found the weath the internet has to offer.
I have now started to focus around obtaining gem crystals on matrix and have a particular obsession with topaz......with the aim of developing a World Class topaz collection...maybe one day hey!
I hope you enjoy my slowly expanding Mindat gallery and if you have any great topaz specimens you are willing to part with, please, please let me know!!
Many Thanks!

A well formed, transparent, pale blue, 2.5 cm topaz crystal perched on top of a ball of white cleavelandite. On one side is a 5 cm double-terminated smoky quartz crystal. Most likely from the Mokrusha pegmatite.

Chinese Topaz plate
This was on the cover of Mineralogical Record for Jan/Feb of 2007. We were not even aware it had been chosen, so what a delight to see it on there! We purchased this from Rob Lavinsky. Photo by Jeff Scovil.

Dassu (Dasso; Dusso), Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan
10.2 x 10.2 x 6.5 cm. An INCREDIBLY FINE combination CABINET piece from Pakistan. A large, 5.6 x 4.0 cm, gemmy and lustrous, light-champagne-colored topaz crystal sits at a divergent angle to a 13.5 cm, water-clear, lightly frosted quartz crystal. The topaz has a wonderful, complex termination. The large crystals are beautifully accented by two, ...

5.3 x 5.2 x 2.8 cm. As you can see, this is an absolutely TEXTBOOK crystal of topaz, pristine, with perfect symmetry. It is 1.5 cm in height, and it is wrapped by the termination of a milky euhedral quartz crystal. There is some bladed accenting albite as well.

Little Three Mine (Little 3), Ramona District, San Diego Co., California, USA
A very aesthetically arranged matrix topaz from this well known U.S. locality! The specimen shows a gemmy transparent very pale blue terminated topaz crystal measuring 3.6 x 2.9 x 3.8 cm, this set nicely on a colorless bladed crystallized albite matrix, with a smaller topaz crystal. There is some chipping present along the upper termination of ...

A gemmy Topaz, with just a hint of pinkish brown colour, measuring almost 3cm tall, stands proud of a matrix of lustrous snow white finely bladed Cleavelandite, and pearlescent honey coloured booklets of Muscovite to 28mm length. An attractive specimen that displays well. Pellman #933

Dassu (Dasso; Dusso), Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan
This is an excellent combo specimen that well represents the upper end of material from Pakistan, from this classic occurence. Three transparent, lustrous, champagne-colored crystals of topaz to 2.5 cm in length are aesthetically perched on and in snow white, lustrous, bladed albite. There are even a few, terminated, lustrous, beige muscovite ...

Tony H. Gill's Blog
A blog is a series of personal articles recorded in date-order somewhat like diary entries. You can use your blog to keep track of your collecting adventures, your purchases, your thoughts and ideas, anything that you think other mindat.org members would be interested to read about. Other members can leave comments after your blog entry, but you can delete any comments you find inappropriate.
Tony H. Gill's Articles
Articles are pages created by you to share with other mindat.org users. These may be serious (a formal scientific article) or personal (you could write an article about your collecting adventures, or about your artistic creations). You can work on your articles in private until you are ready to publish them. The best articles will be promoted throughout the site.
Unlike Blog Entries, you can continue to edit your articles if they have been published (should you find new information, for example).
