My name is Travis Olds, I'm a graduate student studying chemistry at the Materials Science of Actinides Energy Frontier Research Center at the University of Notre Dame. I'm from Ishpeming, MI and have been interested in minerals and the chemistry behind them since I was 16 (when I could actually drive to the places I read about haha). I really enjoy uranium, thorium, REE and other exotic element containing minerals. With much help I've recently documented four new mineral occurrences for the state of Michigan: native mercury, metacinnabar, sklodowskite, and calcurmolite; which is a newly reported Ca-U-Mo species for North America. Although Michigan mineralogy has always been dominated by copper and iron, I find the other lesser known geologic occurrences here such as pegmatites, and U/Th occurrences to be very cool. My email is taolds@mtu.edu.
