A 250 micron sphere of molybdenite (polished and photographed in reflected polarized light with nearly crossed polarizer and analyzer) in talc schist. The "iron cross" extinction pattern remains invariant as the sample is rotated, demonstrating that the sphere is highly uniform in texture, probably with the layers of the molybdenite crystal structure aligned circumferentially around the sphere. Collected September 2001. The colors in the different sectors show molybdenite's strong reflection dichroism.
