Chalcopyrite on Sphalerite and Quartz
As recorded:
Deveti Septemvri (9th of September) mine, Madan ore field, Rhodope Mts, Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria
56mm x 55mm x 37mm
Lustrous black Sphalerite to 3 mm is partly covered with sprays of sharp, clear Quartz crystals to 16 mm that are in turn intergrown with fine needles of Quartz. A well-formed crystal of iridescent, brassy Chalcopyrite to 10 mm is perfectly perched atop the specimen. With no points of attachment obvious, this specimen is a floater! Only a few tiny Quartz points are damaged, but extremely hard to find even with a loupe. This is an excellent display specimen.
